Bioactive Tips
- Clean up crews commonly used in the hobby are worms, isopods, springtails, darkling beetles and even roaches!
- Biological bacteria develop in the substrate to breakdown organics and waste products, cycling this similarly to a fish tank is a great idea
- Springtails can be added during the cycling process, but other occupants are typically recommended to wait a week or so but still added prior to the planned occupant to settle in is recommended
- Urate still needs to be manually removed cleaners will not break this down!
- A healthy bioactive system will heave a earthy smell rather than a ammonia or foul odour
- Lower levels of the substrate should always be kept moist for the “cleaners” to dig down if needed, a drainage layer is highly recommended to prevent stagnant and excess buildups of water within the substrate. A “port” or similar means to drain off excess water is a smart addition to any drainage layer.
- Live plants will utilize the excrement of the cleaners! Making a much more fulfilling and enjoyable experience by both livestock and owner
